Gustav Stickley and the American Arts & Crafts Movement

The Dallas Museum of Art is currently hosting an exhibit titled “Gustav Stickley and the American Arts & Crafts Movement“. I highly recommend seeing it. The exhibit features 100 original Stickley pieces along with great information about the three Stickley brothers and the history of their companies.

The furniture in this exhibit represents the beginning of the American Arts and Crafts era. Originally marketed to the “middle income” family of the time, Stickley furniture is highly collectible today. Hurry and see it before it closes on May 8.

Interestingly, before the exhibit arrived in Dallas, we were commissioned to build a Stickley desk for a client. The photo below shows the Gustav Stickley desk we are using as inspiration for our project.

Our client has requested a couple of minor changes for convenience sake. So, ours will not be an exact copy, but it will be a very close representation. Watch for future posts that will chronicle the construction and finishing of our Stickley desk.
